You're inside reading this while it is freezing outside! If you were to walk outside right now, what would happen? If you were smart, first you'd put on a coat and boots and mittens and a hat, and that would keep you warm. If you weren't, you'd walk out and yell "It's cold!" - and then you'd run back inside.

If you're an animal, you can't run back inside. So what do you do? How about freeze part of yourself to survive? Or dig a cozy burrow in the snow? Or shiver all day long? Some small animals can remain comfortable in temperatures as low as -70 degrees C. But for most of us, the cold of winter challenges us at much higher temperatures. When it comes to winter, nature's creatures have a lot of strategies to make it through. Read on to discover how life adjusts to the most brutal cold, wind, snow and ice. You may want to put on a hat.
